Why School Teaches the Wrong Kind of Thinking

Most school trains you to remember answers.

That's not a flaw in the system — it's the point. Standardised tests reward recall, not reasoning. So kids get very good at holding information in their heads and very bad at using it to solve anything real...

The gap nobody talks about

Ask a 14-year-old what the capital of France is and they'll tell you in a heartbeat. Ask them to design a plan for a school event, and they freeze. The second question has no answer key. It requires thinking!

We call that gap the "answer-key gap." It's the distance between what you can recite and what you can actually do.

First principles isn't a magic trick

A lot of people hear "think from first principles" and assume it's some genius trick. It isn't. It's just the habit of breaking a problem down to its most basic truths and rebuilding from there, instead of copying what everyone else does.

You don't need to be a prodigy. You need to get comfortable with the question "why do we do it this way?"

What we do in the cohort

Every week we give the kids a real problem — not a worksheet. Then we work backwards: what do we actually know? What can we test? What would happen if we were wrong?

It's uncomfortable at first. That's the point. Growth happens in the uncomfortable part.
